Middletons Cannock partner with The Hygiene Bank

We often take our toiletries and hygiene products for granted, but imagine if you couldn't wash before an interview or you couldn't change your baby's nappy? Imagine if you had to choose between eating or washing. We believe that no one in the modern world should be in this situation. That's why we've partnered with The Hygiene Bank, to help people in our community.

When we land in a town near you, we commit ourselves to help the local community and we want to get involved and make a difference to the community around us by going above and beyond. That's why the team in Cannock have been busy collecting hygiene products for charity. Here’s how it works and how you can help them…

What is The Hygiene Bank?

The Hygiene Bank is a grassroots, community initiative that collects hygiene and personal care items using local businesses for those in need throughout the UK and Ireland. They believe that being clean is not a luxury or a privilege and are wholly committed to alleviating hygiene poverty by empowering the community to act. Read more about The Hygiene Bank here...

How does it work?

The Hygiene Bank collects and redistributes donated toiletries, hygiene, beauty and personal care items to schools, charities, local authority services and voluntary organisations. These are then given for free to people who cannot afford them.

This charity works because there is 443 drop off locations and it supports 592 charitable organisations that tackle a wide range of issues from poverty to domestic abuse and disability. Read more about how it all works here...

The Process:

This is how it all works.

1.    Collect – People and businesses collect and donate toiletries, hygiene products and personal care items.

2.    Drop off – Take the products to drop off locations. Click here to find your nearest one...

3.    Sort – Volunteers collect and sort the donations.

4.    Box up – Products are repackaging and boxed to the different needs of charities.

5.    Deliver – Volunteers load the cars and take the donations to local charities who are working to support the vulnerable in your communities.

6.    Distribute – Charities distribute the donated products to families and individuals that need them in the community.

What is hygiene poverty?

Over 14 million people in the UK live in poverty (that is one in five people). 4.5 million of these are children and this figure has increased for the third consecutive year. (source: Social Metrics Commission)

Many people often find themselves in crisis and have to make distressing decisions like whether they can eat or keep clean because they can’t afford to do both. This situation can lead to shaming, humiliation and being excluded from society.

This leads to a lack of confidence and can negatively affect a person’s health and mental well-being. This, in turn, affects childhood development, learning, employability and the ability to interact in a social situation. It’s ultimately about dignity, self-confidence and mental wellbeing.
